Going into last week’s district schedule the Zachary Broncos were sporting a 5-3 overall district mark with four games left in league play. Their record is now 5-5 after two tough losses to state powers in Central of Baton Rouge and Scotlandville.

Zachary will look to finish the district schedule with an above five hundred mark but they will need to close the season with two big wins over Walker and the Catholic High School Bears. “We want to win these last two and then see what happens,” said Coach Kirby Loupe.

Loupe, who is in his first season as head coach of the Broncos has seen progress but he knows that the final two games could prove to be big for the future of the program. Last week the Broncos fell to Central 55-36 and then lost to the #3 team in Class 5A as Scotlandville handed Zachary an 89-35 loss.

“I thought we played hard against Central and then they closed with a big run but against Scotlandville we fell behind way to early in the game. Credit both of those team as they are both very good clubs,” Loupe said.

Zachary was in good shape against Central early in the week as they trailed only 20-16 at halftime. But the Wildcats closed the game by going on a 35-20 run to win the game 55-36. Morris Wright led Zachary with a team high 11 points.

Then later in the week the Broncos had the difficult task of taking on the 3rd ranked Scotlandville Hornets. Scotlandville had been ranked #1 earlier this season but entered the game against Zachary as the 3rd best team in Class 5A.

The Hornets jumped on the Broncos early in the game and they never let up as they came out with a big 33-10 run in the first quarter. Scotlandville then closed the first half with a 25-7 run to take a commanding 58-17 lead at the break.

Morris Wright once again led the Broncos as he scored a game high 16 points. Now Zachary has a chance to close the season with two big wins and with a little help they could move in position to possibly advance to the Class 5A playoffs.

“We are just focused on these two games right now. I think that the players have worked hard and we want to end the season on a high note.”
