Zachary Police Chief David McDavid said Zachary Police officers assisted Louisiana State Police in a traffic stop Friday night where they apprehended a suspect involved in the rape and kidnap of a young woman in Baton Rouge earlier in the day, McDavid said.

Michael Rushing, 47, of 14185 Brown Road in Baker, was stopped near Rollins Road and E. Central Avenue, McDavid said.

Rushing had his wife and child in the vehicle with him, as well as a gun, said McDavid.

The truck, described as a red, four-door Chevrolet Silverado pickup with tan leather interior, and the driver's description both fit the descriptions of the Baton Rouge Police, who began the search for Rushing on Friday afternoon, said McDavid.

Rushing, armed with a gun, is alleged to have kidnapped a 22-year-old woman Friday, July 27, from the Bone and Joint Clinic, 7301 Hennessy Blvd. in Baton Rouge, as she was exiting her vehicle and about to walk into the clinic for a check-up, authorities have said.

Rushing is said to have forced the young woman into a truck and drove her to some woods in Iberville Parish where he allegedly raped her, Cpl. Jean McKneely said on Friday.

Police say the suspect approached the woman at 12:33 p.m.

After the attack, the suspect then dropped the woman off at a McDonald’s restaurant on Nicholson Drive, McKneely said.

Police were notified immediately and LSU sent out an alert to students, staff and faculty alerting them of the attack, said police.

The woman helped police in finding her attacker by releasing details about him, a news release states.

Baton Rouge Police arrested Rushing Saturday, July 28, and have booked him into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of aggravated rape and second-degree kidnapping, Cpl. Thomas Stubbs said in a news release.
