Earlier this year, the Quality of Life division of the Zachary Chamber of Commerce began organizing efforts to form an arts council for the community of Zachary.

Several months and many, many meetings later, the Regional Arts Council of Zachary was created…

What is an Arts Council?

In short, arts councils strive to develop, promote and coordinate the arts at the community level. These organizations thrive best when they respond to the needs and creative possibilities which are unique to their various local communities.

Although no two arts councils are alike, what they do have in common is a desire to increase the interest of their communities in music, dance, crafts, theater, literature and visual arts; to assist community members who wish to make an artistic contribution; and to bring the artist and community together in a mutually beneficial relationship.

What are some activities of arts councils?

The range of arts council activities seems to be unlimited. In addition to acting as a collective “voice” for the arts, councils put on art festivals, offer classes, hold exhibits, take workshops and performances into schools, coordinate the activities of existing arts organizations, conduct united arts fund drives, provide common administrative services to member groups, and maintain joint mailing lists.

They also provide grants to local artists or organizations, sponsor workshops, lend equipment and sponsor, facilitate or coordinate other artistic community sanctioned events, such as concerts, theatrical productions, ballets and choral events.

How did the Regional Arts Council of Zachary get started?

The idea of the arts council was initiated by the Quality of Life division of the Zachary Chamber of Commerce, which felt the community could benefit from a greater presence of the arts in Zachary.

Efforts were made to have a wide cross section of the community represented at the initial meeting. After several meetings, this group became the steering committee and was charged with the task of forming the non-profit organization which is now officially named the Regional Arts Council of Zachary.

At the most recent meeting of the steering committee, the Board of Directors of RACZ was appointed and a Chairman of the Board was elected.

Articles of Incorporation have been filed and RACZ is in the process of applying for 501c3 status. A kick-off event is in the works for this fall to introduce the community to the arts council, present the mission and goals of the arts council, as well as discuss community needs with the residents of Zachary and surrounding areas.

How can community members become involved?

If you or someone you know may be interested in getting involved in the arts council, please contact the Chamber of Commerce 654-6777 or Joy Petty by e-mailing joypetty@cox.net.
