The ZHS Bronco basketball team played Tara High School in the New Orleans Sports Arena, and the Zachary community, students and businesses were invited to participate.
Athletes, basketball fans, faculty members, residents, family and friends boarded buses and left about 10:30 a.m. to head to the New Orleans Arena for an afternoon of NBA treatment.
"This is a special night to have New Orleans at Zachary's feet," said Devin Johnson, New Orleans Hornets group sales manager, prior to the event. Johnson is also a Zachary native and ZHS grad.
Johnson said the Broncos vs. Trojans game would be treated like a home game for the Broncos, only it would be in New Orleans and played on the Hornets' court. Athletes, students, businesses, residents and more would be recognized by announcers and on the arena's Jumbotron.
Zachary players had access to the Hornets' locker rooms, the court, the entire sports arena plus ticket giveaways and prizes were awarded on Zachary's Night at the Hive.
Carlyn Tall, general manager for Best Western Inn in Zachary, organized and promoted the event and was instrumental in selling tickets.
"Our goal was to sell a certain amount of tickets, about 150, to the community, and we surpassed that goal...we did really well. The night was a huge success for Zachary and the ZHS Broncos," Tall said. "We really appreciate the hospitality of the New Orleans Hornets and all those involved in making this wonderful night come to fruition."
The Bronco Belles and ZHS Cheerleaders also performed, and tables of Zachary businesses were recognized.
Following the Broncos' game at 2 p.m., the New Orleans Hornets played the Charlotte Bobcats at 7 p.m..
Zachary's Night at the New Orleans Hornets' Hive was a huge success with the Broncos beating the Trojans and the Hornets defeating the Bobcats 89 - 73.
