Hunting, a sport loved by members of the Gill-McGlynn-Smith clan of Baton Rouge and St. Francisville, has come to an end with the close of the extended DMAP hunting program for residents in areas of West Feliciana Parish who participated, and paid for, the right to hunt an additional 15 days through Feb. 13. The regular season for that area ended Jan. 29.

Riley Gill McGlynn, 15, of Baton Rouge, and her little brother Aidan McGlynn, 6, of Baton Rouge, hunted with their grandparents, Sandi "NiNi" and Joel "Poppa" Smith on the Smiths' private property in Weyanoke during the La. Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries' experimental DMAP hunting extension program.

Joel and Aidan took the 10-point buck during an evening hunt on Smith's property in West Feliciana Parish on Saturday, Feb. 4.

Aidan took his first attempt at the deer with his brand-new BB gun and was assisted by Smith, who finished off the deer with his Browning 30-06 rifle. The nice buck weighed 155 lbs.

"The buck was rutted down," said Smith. "It's right eye was damaged, it had cuts on the head and ears...you could just tell he had been fighting."

Way to go, Aidan!
