Saints and Vikings split a pair in prep hoops

In a battle of district 7-3A Teams, the West Feliciana Saints took on district rival Northeast last week. Both the boys and girls teams faced each other with the Vikings coming out on top against the Saints, while in the girls game the Saints took care of business.
In the girls game both teams were looking to pick up their first district win of the season. West Feliciana was ahead 21-19 after the first quarter, and then they began to stretch their lead before halftime.
Sophomore Britney Washington had one of the best games of the season by any player from any team in district 7-3A. Washington poured in a game-high 29 points in helping lead her team to their first district win of the season.
The Saints would pad their lead in the second quarter by going on a 15-5 run to take a 36-24 lead into the locker room. Shaniqua Payne would come up with a big game for the Lady Vikings as she paced her team with 21 points.
West Feliciana then closed the game with a 35-29 run to win the game 71-53. Maddie Trisler chipped in 19 points for West Feliciana while Calandria Allen added 13 and Norman Whitaker scored six points.
Monica Huggins had 14 points for the Lady Vikings in a losing cause. Northeast fell to 0-3 in league play while the Lady Saints are now 1-2 in 7-3A competition. West Feliciana then went for the sweep in the nightcap but Northeast High had other ideas in mind.
In the boys games, Northeast would earn a split as they came up with a 66-54 win over the Saints. Demascus Jackson led the way for the Vikings with a game high 19 points while West Feliciana’s Kenneth Davis also had 19 points in the game.
The Saints opened the game with a 15-10 run in the first quarter but then the Vikings came storming back with a big run in the second. The Vikings erased the Saints' lead and then built a big lead for themselves with a 23-8 run in the second quarter.
The Vikings led 33-23 at halftime and would not surrender the lead again. B. Alexander scored 13 points for Northeast and Makkail Bethley added 12. With a ten point lead entering the second half, both teams scored 15 points each in the third with the Vikings still in control by ten points as the teams went into the fourth quarter.
Northeast edged West Feliciana in scoring in the final period 18-16. Deshawn Morrison had nine points for the Saints, Byron Cobb added eight markers and Destin Dawson scored seven for West Feliciana.
Jonathan Huggins and Fred Hamilton added six points each for Northeast as they improved to 12-11 overall and 1-1 in district 7-3A. The Saints fell to 0-2 in district play with the loss.
